2010 37th Annual Street Rod Reunion. An Article by Richard B. Clark, Cruisin Style Magazine, Issue 183.
Thirty Eight years is quite a while to have an annual and successful rod run. That’s what the Red River Street Rod Association has been doing with consistency. 2010 was the 38th year for the run, held at the Rode Way Inn Motel just off I20 in Bossier City, LA. This club is LA’s first and oldest street rod club.
This car club knows what it is doing and the members go out of their way to make everyone welcome. They have decades of cruising and rod runs behind them, knowing just what the participants want when they pull in and register. It is a show for vehicles at
least 30 years old.
It started out on April 9th for early registrations. They were fed lots of pizza and goodies and settled in for the big show the next day. When we pulled in and set up, members of the club made us feel right at home. Sat. the 10th the show got in full swing and the weather was sunny. The parking lot filled up and there were regular attendees everywhere.
The rod run is well advertised each year and lots of local residents and passersby stop to look at the cars and trucks. It is a great way to show off your pride & joy. Lots of door prizes were under the large canopy and were given away all day. A DJ belted out the old time rock & roll, a local singer performed and there were t-shirts, games, a wipe out board, 50/50 pot, cash prizes, NHRA inspections and more.
Vendors set up also and a master pin striper stayed pretty busy. Lunch is always great at this show! Shuttles carry anyone wanting to go to the famous Boardwalk in Shreveport or to the casinos. Many participants just sit back and enjoy the show. An attraction that always gets lots of attention is a Dale Earnhardt Chevy Nascar racer. When this baby fires up, the crowd gathers! It is owned by Dick Nelson of Nelson Engineering.
The cars & trucks roll in from TX, AR, LA of course and beyond. Many members from other clubs come each year. We see old friends and really enjoy this show. I never get tired of photographing beautiful and unique American iron!
One outstanding PU was Johnathon Brown’s ’80 Chevy. With a bright in your face color, wooden bed and custom matching interior, this truck deserves a second look. It shined like new money and is powered by a brute force Chevy motor, of course. It was custom built by River City Rods & Customs of LA. Many other show cars & trucks were well worth the attention they got also.
Awards were handed out later in the afternoon for the top 5 pre and post 1949. There was also a trophy for Best of Show and Best Under Construction. Several sponsor plaques were given. There was $3295 raised for the Shreveport Rescue Mission. Then it was time for us to pack up and head back to TX.
The Rod Run is being moved to the Boomtown Casino on Riverside Drive in Bossier City, LA for 2011 and will be on April 8th & 9th. There will be special room rates, free t-shirt & Casino lunch buffet to the 1st 100 entrants and more. This should be an excellent location for the rod run.
